A2I Assessment CD-Rom

Many software development organizations or IT service providers strive to improve their software processes using the Capability Maturity Model. Performing an assessment identifies strong points and directions for improvement. DNV-CIBIT has developed tooling and aids for performing CMM-based assessments: the A2I: Assess to Improve Assessment CD-Rom.

Tooling for CMM-based assessments
Performing an assessment implies an intensive period for both the assessment team as well as the organization being assessed. During one week, a division of the organization is involved in several intensive activities. Therefore, these activities should be carefully tuned and coordinated across the assessment team and the organization. The A2I Assessment CD-Rom supports the assessment team in performing CMM-based assessments in such a way that the best possible result is gained.

Assess to ImproveA2I CD RomServices and information
The A2I: Assess to Improve approach is a light-weight self-assessment approach focused at improving the organization being assessed. The approach is light-weight and interactive and depends on active involvement of the organization. The main outcome of assessments following this approach is not so much a maturity score, but rather a set of improvement actions ready to be undertaken directly after the assessment has been finished.

The A2I Assessment CD-Rom was developed to support the A2I: Assess to Improve assessment approach.

A2I assessments are based on the Capability Maturity Model. For software development organizations, the Software CMM is used as the reference model; for IT service providers, the IT Service CMM is used instead.

The A2I approach distinguishes three phases:
  1. Intake
  2. On-site part
  3. Assessment aftercare

During the intake phase, the goal of the assessment is determined, the participants of the organization are selected, and a planning for the rest of the assessment is made. During the on-site part of the assessment, questionnaires are administered, interviews are held, and presentations and workshops are given. During the assessment aftercare, an assessment report detailing the results of the assessment is produced.

Audience and purpose
The A2I Assessment CD-Rom is essential for performing A2I assessments. Companies offering process improvement activities to third-party software development organizations or IT service providers can extend their portfolio with A2I assessments. Secondly, a process improvement group of an organization may perform an assessment on another division to initiate improvement within the organization.

The A2I Assessment CD-Rom contains various aids that support the assessment team in performing an A2I asssessment.

The key components of the CD-Rom are summarized below:
    Script
    The script describes the various activities of the assessment in detail. In this way, the separation of duties within the assessment team is clear at all times. Furthermore, it describes what other parts of the A2I Assessment Kit can be used to support the various activities.
    Questionnaires
    The kit contains questionnaires for the Software CMM and the IT Service CMM.
    Interview forms
    Interviews following the A2I approach consist of several phases. The phases are laid down in an administration form on which the interviewer can take down his findings. In this way, no essential part of the interview is forgotten.
    Worksheets
    Answers to the questionnaire and the results of the interviews can be registered in worksheets. Using these worksheets, the assessment team can gain insight into the degree in which the organizations performs certain activities.
    Templates
    The presentations that are given during an A2I assessment consist of various standard components. Furthermore, the documents produced contain standard components as well. Therefore, these documents and presentations are provided as templates.
    Activity checklist
    In performing an assessment, a certain amount of organizational activities play a role. Examples of these activities include the physical production of sheets, printing of questionnaires, checking locations, et cetera. In order to let the assessment be a success, the assessment team should pay attention to these matters as well. Therefore, these activities are summed up in a checklist, enabling the assessment team to track the exact status of the assessment.
