International Master Class Knowledge Management

Today a growing number of people realise that knowledge is playing a crucial part in the competitive abilities of the organization. Developments in the business, in society and in technology require adaptations in how our products and services need to meet the demands of the market. They also require a change in how our knowledge and skills are organized. How do I design my knowledge infrastructure? Where do I begin? Which techniques and methods are useful? Which bottlenecks do I have to circumvent? Every organization has its own demands concerning a knowledge infrastructure, but how do you prioritise the demands within your organization and evaluate their importance?

A Master Class?
The Master Class concept, originally developed in music, involves short intensive sessions, interaction with other skilled and ambitious colleagues, and guidance by an experienced ‘Master’.
DNV Academy - CIBIT has many years of experience in organising various Master Classes for business professionals. Using this proven approach to development, highly motivated management professionals can raise their levels of knowledge and skills to the ‘state of the art’ in a relatively short time. Participants in this Master Class will quickly develop their own Mastery in this emerging field. The Master Class will support them in their personal development from craftsmanship to mastery.

State of the artProgrammeInformationExpertise
After many successful knowledge management (KM) workshops and Master Classes for European professionals, DNV Academy - CIBIT decided to offer the Master Class with open enrolment internationally for the second time. The Master Class offers you the state of the art in the field: theories, methods, instruments and business cases that help you to become a successful KM practitioner. Interaction with colleagues from various organisations and experienced experts makes up the core of the programme and creates a stimulating and most effective learning environment. The intensive five day Master Class in a pleasant conference environment consists of workshops, discussions and practical exercises in small groups and is supported by up-to-date and extensively tested learning materials. Bring your own business case and get the most out of this week, while learning how to become a successful knowledge management practitioner.

Our vision on knowledge management

Land, capital and machinery are no longer decisive in a world-wide market of products and ideas. Individuals, companies and even nations have become more and more dependent on the way they leverage their competencies and apply their knowledge in order to realize their goals. The impact of knowledge is getting more and more important in our society. Knowledge, like any other asset, needs to be managed pro-actively.
KM is about smart ways of working and smart businesses. It is worthless unless people turn their knowledge into action. Enterprises should manage knowledge in order to convert it into business benefits. Smart businesses should know how to:
  • share knowledge across borders (functional, divisional, regional and cultural) in order to improve business performance;
  • learn before, during and after activities to increase efficiency and effectiveness;
  • learn from colleagues, customers and other parties to improve products and processes;
  • realize that networked activities focused on innovation, knowledge creation and synergies become more and more important to cope with competition and take on opportunities so your organization meets the challenges of 21st century knowledge-based society.

Participant information

Participants of this Master Class are managers and professionals who are responsible for or are involved with knowledge management initiatives and the implementation of these initiatives.

The 5-day programme

Knowledge Management: an update (first module)
Departing from some basic concepts and practical examples, you will reach understanding of the role knowledge fulfils within organisations and the wide range of possible KM measures. We will introduce you to various possible approaches to KM.

Knowledge and strategy (second module)
Is it possible to embed KM in the strategy of your enterprise? How do you do that? How can you relate KM initiatives to your business goals effectively? These questions will be answered during this part of the programme. You will gain insight in the relationship between the vision of an organisation, its core competence and actual knowledge areas.

Knowledge and learning
In this part of the Master Class you will get acquainted with instruments organisations can deploy in order to optimise their learning capability. The focus is on how to make knowledge creation processes faster and yet more effective. You will discuss the most important perspectives on learning within organisations, and be able to identify learning obstacles and their solutions. Special attention will be paid to your personal ability to translate these concepts into concrete learning actions within your own organisation.

Designing a knowledge infrastructure (third module)
After attending the first two modules, you will now be ready to discuss possible components of knowledge infrastructures such as intranets, knowledge profiles, knowledge networks, communities of practice and best practices collections.
Design principles of knowledge infrastructures will be made clear through the use of a case. You will be able to specify targets and select components for the knowledge infrastructure that you would like to realise. The emphasis will be on letting you experience by yourself how to make the connection between targets and knowledge infrastructures, as well as the actual design work.

Organising knowledge flow (fourth module)
Special attention will be paid to how organisations can optimise the use of available knowledge and to make the right knowledge available in the right place at the right time. A wide range of measures which organisations can deploy to achieve this will be presented. Corporate Memory is an inter-related combination of processes, systems and roles. This concept will serve as a frame for this module. Optimising the productivity of knowledge is the central issue. You will be invited to consider the application of these measures in your business case in order to optimise the productivity of knowledge flow in your own business environment.

Implementing KM within your own organisation (fifth module)
The central theme of this final day is the way in which Change Management enables an effective implementation of KM in organisations. This forms the apotheosis of the Master Class: developing your own action plan for improving KM in your company. You will have the opportunity to receive feedback from the consultants who make up the faculty and share experiences with other participants. This effectively improves your KM implementation skills.
