Consultant Bart Jacobs introduces himself

Bart Jacobs studied Management Economics and Law in The Hague, followed by Policy Communication and Organization at the VU University Amsterdam. Analyzing Organizations from diverse angles was the main focus in this study, although during his Master he has specialized himself in networks and knowledge transfer. In his thesis he combined both areas’ to measure knowledge transfer between technical engineers within and between different networks.

Bart believes that the human factor is a key factor in starting up, retain and develop knowledge sharing initiatives within a network. Technology plays an important role to analyze and forecast possible outcomes, but it is the combination of both areas which creates a solid base for knowledge management initiatives. Well-thought strategies, learned lessons of colleagues and learning by evaluation are important possibilities to enhance results within organizations.

During his management study Bart gained experience in projects in Telecom and several banks. After his studies he worked for a large bank and a Dutch community in service of a financial organization focused on project management. He now works as a consultant at DNV-CIBIT since the first of July 2008.
His book top 3
  • Nummer
    1: Working Knowledge
How Organizations Know what they know, Davenport T.H. and Prusak L., 1998, Harvard Business School Press..
This book gives a clear overview of the knowledge market. Several issues in knowledge management are discussed and concepts are introduced to handle these situations. Knowledge management should be a source of sustainable competitive advantage by generating, codifying and transferring knowledge, but how to accomplish this in practise? This volume answers this question by revealing how to put knowledge to work and how to maximal utilize the inexhaustible resource knowledge. Working Knowledge is a very good starting tool for everyone trying to understand the application of knowledge.

  • Nummer 2: Social Networks and Organizations
Kilduff M. and Tsai W., 2003, SAGE publications ltd..
Social networks within organizations are difficult to distinguish and visualize in practice. In this volume the diverse streams of literatures on social networks are revealed, accompanied by areas which are currently untapped. Social network theories, approaches and processes are discussed as well as their consequences in real life or within organizations. The major concepts of organizational networks are provided in a compact way. Those who seek a lucid treatment of social network approaches are recommended to read this book. Beside Theories and concepts the book ends with a section of how to get started with data analysis and interpretation within social networks.

  • Nummer 3: The Goal
A Process of ongoing improvement, Goldratt E.M. and Cox J., 1984, Norths River Press, Great Barrington, MA..
This novel is interesting not only for explaining the theory of constraints, but especially for the way of thinking of the main character. Difficult issues often can be solved by moving the problem to a new setting. In this book, a fabric manager moves the problem of his inefficient production processes to a weekend with his son on a scouting camp. He also contacts a friend who helps him via the Socratic Method (talk amongst themselves). The manager is forced to think original and move aside conventional methods of thinking, and together with his crew he is able to improve the production processes which results in survival of his fabric (and more).
